Monsoon , Mud and Me

As wind kisses my cheek on this dark cloudy night ... alone is me staring through the window and finding nothing. This is the first week of June and as I write through this.. I hear distant sound of thunderstorms , which are always scary be it for me or for the 5 member cat family and black street dog who wander in my street.

The hot Indian summers are especially humid and they suck all the water from your body and land. The land becomes hard and cracks .... the cracks show the way that they give space for water to enter through them as rains come. We have recorded  highest temperature in New Delhi , as the new governments forms in the subcontinent after the hot poll scenario.

Every year at this point of time every Indian farmer, markets and common person like me who loves to get wet have their own story to tell , why we eagerly wait for the showers that monsoon brings. In our subcontinent we have two major monsoons the South west monsoon  and North East monsoon; SW monsoon  brings good rainfall to most parts of the country and is a crucial component for agriculture , power generation (hydel) , flora and fauna. Yes now is the season for South west monsoon often called by markets as “real finance minister of India “ as rains effect the overall economy – Arun Jaitley "Listening" !
30% of manufacturing sector is agriculture based and more than 60%  net sown area is rainfed.

The above photograph is taken near Tiruvananthapuram  and it was in the same place I was there in 2007 during my college South India tour and the first showers of monsoon on me ... the moments are still fresh in my heart  and that was the moment when I embraced nature's healing moments . These are the showers of blessing to a thirsty soul like me and the dried up land by the hot Indian summer. Few moments are breathtaking and this is one in my life. SW Monsoon first touches Kerala state in India  around 1st June , this year it is delayed for few days and it spreads across the country by july end and withdraws by September.

Besides the above as I pen down, the wind increases its speed in this busy cry of cities , thundershowers light up the night and  all signs point to the advent of monsoon ... its mid night  and celebrations in my heart. As the first drops of rain touch the soil, they bring the promise of better life and of course to decrease the load shedding J

This reminds me the “ Power of smell “ it is one of the important senses gifted by God to mankind, it is plays a vital role in elevating the mood. Consequently, perfumes are a big business, and the most popular of them command serious money.  Scientists across the world spend years crafting pleasing odor combinations.  And for many the most exotic and exclusive scents can be Clive Christian No. 1 Imperial Majesty Perfume or even Chanel No.5 . There is someone else who can beat them its Petrichor "  the scent of rain on dry earth - In my words the mud smell after rain ... it is amazing scent that trails through the soil bed and the raising scent captures your olfactory notes., its mystical and magical.... Have a hot pakoda and masale tea sit in balcony with your loved one and to add the icing on the cake “ the mud smell is aromatic and makes it a romantic time.  So this is one scent which can’t be captured in a bottle and sold .. its freely available in nature for you and me to enjoy.

Leave about the El Nino effect  as not all the El Nino years did not result in drought ....
The rains  have arrived .... monsoon has filled my heart  and the scent of mud drenched by the showers filled my nostrils, it’s time to pull out your raincoats ,  umbrella's and gear up to jump in the water when no one else is seeing..... enjoy the rains they are there to help us as always !
