Rajahmundry
(Rajamahendravaram) the bustling town lies on the bank of mighty river Godavri.
Famously know as cultural capital of
Andhra Pradesh. Today, while the town is up to speed with modern times,
the grandeur and glory of its illustrious past still prevails. Be it dazzling
temples, the four bridges that connect, spectacular British built Lutheran
churches, Colourful shopping, each of these famous places has an intriguing
story to tell.
You
must have read on the temples to visit as you come to Pushkaralu but as
a native from Rajahmundry town , I thought to pen down what else you can do
when you are in Rajahmundry during this 12 day long celebrations of Maha Pusharalu
coming after 144 years
1.
Sir Aurthur Cotton Museum :
The
museum is in Dowleswaram. The mighty river Godavari became Annapoorna ( the
most fertile agricultural lands) because of one important person Sir Aurthur
Cotton , even after centuries he is worshipped as God. The museum gives you
information on how the river flows, various implements used during the earlier
times when Barrage was constructed. Must see for everyone who would like
to learn more about early civil engineering, our history, how a place
which was always flooded became one of the most important places in agriculture
in the country. You will see a Statue of Sir Aurthur Cotton on the way ...
don't forget to take a selfie. You can go to the barrage from there.
2. Kadiam
Nurseries:
Within 6-7 kilometres from Rajahmundry lies a village called
Kadiam on NH5 highway. You can find 100's of acres of horticulture plants ,
which are exported to nuke and corner of the country. All nurseires allow you
to go around and see , you can click few of your portaits in flower gardens. I
recommend you to buy some plants in memory of your trip.
3.
Shopping :
What better can relax a tired soul apart from good retail
therapy. If you know or not the Bommana's and Chandana's the famous retail
merchants are from very own Rajahmundry. As you walk behind the pushkar ghat it
is all main bazaar. Rajahmundry is famous for cloth shopping and a commercial
city. Don't get fancy by the big new outlets but see for the local retailers
whom I have mentioned above. You can get best sarees and other material a
recommended souvenir to buy. It will be a colourful, exotic and
pleasingly chaotic area, packed with shops and lanes and probably the
highest concentration you must have seen. Thaditota is the wholesale market you
can even go there, it is just behind the main RTC Bus stand. Don’t miss an
opportunity
4.
Food:
This
is the best to tickle your taste buds. You can have best Rose Milk in the main bazaar,
If you there for a day or two after your holy dip, try Biryani in Sri Kanya Comfort which is very
near to Pushkar ghat. Don't forget Pootharekulu the rice flour, ghee made sweet
famous from this district. Stuffing you get with Jaggery or sugar. I remember my
friends calling it as paper sweet :) Bananna chakkarakeli variety - on the other
side of the banks
in Kovvur there is a
Banana research center, which tells you how famous banana's are
in this place. You can have the best vegetarian meals (Thali) with all local delicacies.
5.
Rallabandi Subbarao Museum:
This
museum is good to visit and has some of the rarest collections
of coins, sculptures and ancient palm-leaf manuscripts. The pottery items seen
here are a fine display of art. The museum preserves and brings to light the
cultural importance of Andhra Pradesh
6.
Damerla Rama Rao Art Gallery:
If you are an art person , you must go to this gallery. Mr. Rama Rao, was born in the late 1890's in Rajahmundry. He was dedicated towards painting and sketching and you find many more under this one roof.
